Across the UK economy, the need to control a wide range of shop-floor environments presents significant challenges. Hart Door Systems has risen to the challenge, writes Chris Dobson.
Such is the range of business and industrial sectors in the UK’s economy, controlling different and wide-ranging business environments presents significant challenges for each sector and for those supplying those sectors.
The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) list has about 200 entries starting with “manufacturing”. Those familiar with the SIC list will be aware of the huge range of industrial activity, behind which is an even larger number of suppliers.
A typical supplier sector is industrial doors, one example of which is Hart Door Systems of Newcastle upon Tyne. Hart is thought to be the UK’s oldest manufacturer of high-speed doors which, via the brand Speedor, have been in continuous production since 1983.
The list of challenges faced by UK and global businesses is extensive and can range from environmental concerns such as temperature control, improving the shop-floor environment, and increasing energy efficiency, to security, fire control and so on.
Typically the automotive sector has different challenges, when compared with heavy chemicals for example. Automotive is about intense production lines with just-in-time and sequential deliveries essential to maintain continuous assembly. Fast opening/closing doors are an important part of the operation, as they are in paint shops, which have entirely different issues ranging from fire risk to employee protection.
This has led Hart’s skills to be used across a wide range of business and industrial sectors, such as energy from waste as a current example. By offering tailor-made solutions to meet specific business needs, in particular controlling the business environment, Hart has adapted to changing demand and continues to do so.
The Speedor range has developed into a family of specific products designed for controlling a range of business environments. All are automatic, high-speed doors, reliably and robustly engineered. They include Speedor Storm, Speedor Cleanroom, Speedor Super, Speedor Mini, Maxi, Conveyor and Twinblade. So the brand has grown significantly as it reacted to specific areas of demand.
Speedor Conveyor has been developed for airport baggage handling systems. It is a revolutionary high speed conveyor door suited for specialist applications such as high frequency conveyor belt systems, providing security and safety between the public area and baggage system mechanics.
Speedor Storm is increasingly requested by industry for high traffic situations where exceptional wind resistance is required. The energy saving potential of this door is particularly high. Capable of withstanding winds up to 90mph when closed, the Storm is a robust and reliable system.
Hart’s international airport experience is considerable. This sector is faced with increasing threats of international terror and serious crime, and Hart invested heavily in designing and testing exceptional high security rolling shutter systems from SR1 – SR4.
The range of shutters, branded as Terror Screen, all conform to Loss Prevention Standards as approved by the LPC Fire and Security Board and Expert Group G. Over 20 organisations assisted in the preparation of this standard, more commonly referred to as LPS1175.
Terror Screen shutters have a high-security weight and strength combination through a twin skin steel lath, reinforced by an aluminium substructure. Independent tests confirm the SR4 withstands 20 minutes of direct attack. This allows on-site security time to arrive and secure the location, protecting key infrastructure facilities and high-value businesses and their assets.
Hart has also developed the Firebrand range of fire-resistant shutters, rated from 30 minutes up to 240 minutes fire resistance, and specifically manufactured to customer dimensions and specification. That’s controlling the business environment.
