Marubeni Komatsu, UK supplier of Komatsu construction equipment, has recently had a bespoke, extra-wide mobile yard ramp designed and installed by Thorworld Industries and supplied by Loading Bay Service.
Five and eight tonne vehicles, typically excavators, are manufactured in Italy and brought to Komatsu’s Redditch site from Italy on flatbed wagons in consignments of three to five. Historically, Komatsu’s UK team used a warehouse ramp to offload them but elements of the practice were considered compromised, and suffered from space restrictions.
The company was looking for a safer and more efficient unloading process. Ideally, the team needed a longer, wider ramp, with a gentle slope to allow warehouse operators to unload the machines without damaging them or creating hazards, as well as being able to withstand the excavator’s hard rubber tracks without damage.
Loading Bay Service and Thorworld designed a bespoke 2.65m wide, 8.5m long ramp with a load capacity of 15,000kg and a durable, long lasting surface. “We have been using the ramp for over 12 months now,” said Marubeni Komatsu health and safety manager William Dowling, “and it looks as good as new. The solution meets our needs entirely.”
